School Consultations

Understanding how school-based therapy and support services work can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming for families. When a child experiences challenges with handwriting, attention, self-regulation, or social or classroom participation, a teacher or parent may raise a concern that leads to an evaluation through the school. If eligible, the school team creates an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan outlining goals, accommodations, and therapy services provided during the school day.

At Creative Therapeutics, we help families make sense of this process and feel confident every step of the way. Our therapists can review school evaluations and reports, help prepare for IEP or 504 meetings, and offer guidance on advocating for your child’s needs. We also collaborate directly with families and school teams to ensure goals are aligned across settings — home, school, and community — so your child experiences consistency and success in all environments.

The Process

  1. Referral or Concern Raised
A teacher, parent, or school staff member identifies a concern with a child’s learning, motor skills, or participation.
  2. Evaluation
The school completes an evaluation (OT, PT, special education testing, etc.) to determine eligibility for services.
  3. Meeting / IEP or 504 Plan
The results are discussed in a team meeting. If eligible, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan is created to outline goals and accommodations.
  4. Therapy Services Begin
The child receives therapy during the school day, targeting school-related skills such as handwriting, attention, or self-care routines.
  5. Ongoing Collaboration & Review
The school team reviews progress regularly and updates goals as needed.

Even if your child receives services through school, additional private occupational therapy can target areas not typically addressed in an educational setting, such as sensory processing, emotional regulation, or daily living skills. We’re here to bridge the gap, strengthen skills beyond the classroom, and empower families to support their child’s growth and independence.
